How To do a Manicure at Home

One of the many things I’ve been missing (while in quarantine) is going to the salon. I’d go to my neighborhood salon once every month for a full-fledged pampering, excluding the occasional, impulsive trips made otherwise (because of eyebrow or hair emergencies etc.). So, after a month of staying at home, I realized that since I couldn’t go to the salon, it was about time that I brought the salon home to me. This is why I took a couple of hours of my time, yesterday, to give myself the make-over I look forward to every month, which included a manicure, pedicure, hair treatment and a facial.

Moving on to the Manicure

Giving yourself a manicure is easier than it seems; the basic steps include cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing and then doing the nails.


First, wash your hands properly and remove any nail polish leftover from before. If you want the manicure to feel more professional, you can soak your hands in a bowl of warm water a couple minutes prior to the cleansing. Mind you, despite the belief that this helps soften the cuticle for the ending steps, some claim that you shouldn’t soak your nails at all before a manicure. Want to know more about this? As for the cleansing, if you don’t have any store-bought masks at home, you can make one yourself. There are a lot that you can find online but I’d recommend mixing cucumber (juiced) with powdered milk in the ratio 1:2. Apply this on your hands and let it sit for 10 minutes and then, wash it off. If you want to do something extra, you can even cut half a lemon and rub it onto your knuckles or any part of the hand that you think requires a little extra brightening.

If you don’t have any store-bought scrubs at home, you could try making one yourself! I’d recommend simply mixing sugar (crystals) with any oil (preferably essential). For more homemade scrubs, read this. Gently massage the scrub onto your hands in circular motions for approximately 5 minutes and then, wash it off.

Dry your hands and moisturize them with any lotion or even with a little bit of oil (for example: coconut oil does wonders for the skin, in terms of brightening) but I wouldn’t recommend the latter if you’re not going to sleep because you’re going to have to endure having greasy/oily hands for the rest of the day. This step was pretty self-explanatory.

The Nails

If you’ve got manicure tools at home, then start off by removing the dead skin around your cuticles and cleaning your nails from the inside (to get rid of dead skin, dirt etc.) if you haven’t already. After that, trim, cut or file your nails into whatever shape you want. As you can see at the start of the blog, I keep mine round and not too small. Bring your manicure to an end by applying a nail color, buffing them or just letting them be.

      I so get you! I 100% relied on my neighbourhood salon for stuff like this and never really came around to being self-sufficient (or at least trying to) until the virus…
